Eaton / Moeller IZM Repair and Refurbishment

The Moeller IZM20 to IZM40 is a Masterpact M underneath, with Moeller badging and its own trip units, and it is just as obsolete. Eaton's IZMX16 and IZMX40 are current. We repair both: mechanism, contacts, coils, motor and trip unit, injection-tested and flown back to your site.

Repair, don't replace

An IZMX retrofit is a board project. A repair isn't.

When an older Moeller IZM fails, the usual OEM answer is an IZMX retrofit. That changes the cradle and the secondary wiring, which turns a single breaker fault into a switchboard job with its own outage, lead time and commissioning.

Repair avoids that. Because the IZM20, IZM26, IZM32 and IZM40 are built on the Masterpact M, their mechanism, contacts, coils and charging motor are Masterpact M parts. The donor stock and re-machining we use for the M range apply directly. The trip electronics are as obsolete as the STR units they replaced, so a dead IZM trip unit gets the same answer: a modern unit fitted inside the original frame, set to the original characteristic and proven by injection test.

The breaker goes back in its own cell. No adapter plate, no new cradle and no rewiring.

Common faults

What fails on IZM and IZMX breakers

Dead or erratic trip unit

Moeller-era IZM trip electronics are out of production and failing with age. On IZMX, PXR trip unit connector faults are the common complaint.

Slow or failed closing

Hardened grease in the mechanism, or a failed closing coil. Both are repaired on the bench.

Won't charge

Charging motor or motor operator failure. Rebuilt, replaced, or on the older IZM, replaced with an engineered equivalent.

Contact erosion

Main and arcing contacts worn on high-duty units, measured against OEM limits and renewed.

Hot cradle contacts

Cluster contacts eroded or overheated, racking mechanisms worn, position switches faulty.

Seized or corroded mechanisms

Damp switchrooms and long periods without operation leave mechanisms stiff or locked. A full strip-down and rebuild brings them back.

The refurbishment

What an IZM overhaul includes

  • Full strip-down and inspection against OEM wear limits
  • Mechanism dismantled, cleaned, worn pivots, springs and latches replaced, re-lubricated
  • Main and arcing contacts renewed or dressed; arc chutes cleaned and inspected
  • Closing coil, shunt trip and undervoltage release tested and replaced as needed
  • Charging motor or motor operator rebuilt or replaced
  • Trip unit tested. On the IZM, a dead unit is replaced with a modern trip unit in the original frame. On the IZMX, PXR connectors are repaired and the unit tested
  • Cluster contacts and racking checked when the cradle comes with the breaker

How it is tested

Secondary injection on every protection element against the published characteristic, contact resistance per pole, insulation resistance and mechanical operation. The certificate comes with before and after photos and a parts list.

FAQ

IZM questions

Eaton quoted an IZMX retrofit for our IZM32. Is repair an option?

Yes, and usually the cheaper one. The IZM32 is a Masterpact M underneath, so its mechanism and contacts are rebuilt from the same donor stock and re-machining we use for the M range. An IZMX retrofit changes the cradle and the wiring.

Can you fit a modern trip unit to an IZM26?

Yes. The unit is fitted inside the frame and set to reproduce the original characteristic, or to the settings you specify, then injection-tested at those settings before it ships.

Do you work on the current Eaton IZMX?

Yes. IZMX16 and IZMX40 faults are the everyday kind: coils, motor operators, contact wear, cradle clusters and PXR connectors.

We have an older Moeller breaker that isn't an IZM. Can you help?

Send a photo of the nameplate. Several older Moeller and Klöckner-Moeller ranges can be supported from donor stock and re-machining, and we'll tell you quickly whether yours is one.

What warranty do we get?

24 months on a full overhaul or refurbishment and 12 months on a repair. Warranty details.

Where do the parts come from for an obsolete IZM?

From three places: donor breakers we strip for serviceable parts, components re-machined to pattern, and modern equivalents engineered in where the design allows, typically coils, motors and trip units. Because the IZM20 to IZM40 share the Masterpact M mechanism, the M-range donor stock covers them too. The certificate lists exactly what was fitted.

Send us the nameplate

A photo of the nameplate and the fault is enough for a first answer. We reply the same working day with a recommendation and a price for diagnosis and freight.
